Main ways Nepalis work in Japan
- Specified Skilled Worker (SSW / Tokutei Ginou): for jobs like caregiving, food service, construction, agriculture and manufacturing. You need to pass a skills test and a Japanese test (JLPT N4 or JFT-Basic).
- Engineer / Specialist in Humanities (Gijinkoku): for IT, engineering and office jobs, usually with a bachelor degree.
- Students: can work part time (limited hours per week during term), mostly in convenience stores, restaurants and factories.
What gets deducted from your salary
Your contract shows gross pay. Take-home pay is lower because Japan deducts health insurance, pension, employment insurance and income tax, and from your second year also resident tax. Rent and utilities are often deducted too if the company provides housing.
- Ask for the take-home (tedori) amount, not only the gross amount.
- If you leave Japan for good, you can claim back part of the pension you paid (lump-sum withdrawal payment).
- Minimum wage is different in every prefecture and goes up most years. Tokyo and Osaka pay more than rural areas.
